Theatre School, Liublino

30 April 2015 – 31 December 2019

No gala event at the Liublino estate went without a musical o theatre performance. A highly professional serf actors’ theatre was part of the estate complex. The exhibition opened at the reconstructed Theatre School building will tell about work and life of the serf troupe trained by a master of theatre art to become one of the best of its time Liublino, a former country estate of a hospitable Moscow landlord Nikolay Durasov, is notable not only for its unusual, well-preserved manor house built on a grand ‘Palace’ scale, but also for a serf theatre and a unique element for a Russian country estate – a separate building of theatre school for serf actors.

At the Liublino estate, no celebration went without a musical or theatre performance. Nikolay Durasov’s orchestra was one of the best in Moscow and his theatre was no less famous than, for example, Sheremetevs’ theatre at Ostankino. It was supervised by famous Russian actor, writer and playwright Peter Plavilshchikov, thanks to whose efforts the Liublino serf troupe reached a highest level of theatrical art. Many of the actors, having received manumission, went on to work for imperial theatres of Moscow and Petersburg.

Documents and graphics concerning the structure and organization of a serf theatre, handwritten and printed music score, musical instruments and theatre-related books, scenery and dress sketches as well as make-up accessories are surrounded by classic furniture pieces and illustrate the working days and gala events of an old-time estate theatre.
